Ciaran’s career hits the heights after conquering his fear

Ciaran Whyte’s career is now hitting the heights– after he got over his fear of them!

The 17-year-old was terrified of heights until he joined Renfrewshire Council’s Recruit programme

His first challenge as a Recruit saw him rock-climbing, something he’d never tried before, because of his fear.

He said: “Overcoming my phobia was amazing. I quite like heights now, and I’m going to try gorge-walking next.”

However, it’s not just his fear of heights Ciaran has conquered – he feels more self-confident too.

He said: “The Recruit has helped me improve my confidence, whether in an interview setting or just talking to people I don’t know.

I find socialising easier, and I’m less nervous about job interviews. I’ve learned how to communicate better and improved my presentation skills, too – now I know what to wear to impress an employer!

Ciaran has also received help from Invest in Renfrewshire with his CV, and took part in a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) training course, which will allow him to work towards a career in the construction industry.

He has also been accepted to a TOPS (Training Opportunities in the Public Sector) placement, which offers six months of work experience with Renfrewshire Council’s Community Resources department, and he couldn’t be happier.

He said: “I’d tell other young people to get to the Hub; it’s the best thing ever. The advisors there will meet your needs, and help support you back into employment.”
